For the First Time, Fish and Game Allows Feeding of Moose

Alaska Moose Federation exclusively allowed to feed moose to keep them off roadways

The harsh winter and record-breaking snowfall has the state taking an unusual step to protect the moose population.

Fish and Game officials have given the Alaska Moose Federation a permit that will allow them to feed the animals in hopes of keeping them off the roadways.

The food will be left in areas moose normally graze on, and away from populated areas

Though Fish and Game issued the permit, officials say they stress it was only for the Alaska Moose Federation and they don’t want anyone else feeding the moose.

“Moose lose fear of man in that situation and become aggressive,” said Tony Kavalok of the Division of Wildlife Conservation. “Ultimately someone could get hurt, or the moose would have to be put down.”

This is the first time the Department of Fish and Game has issued a permit to allow diversionary feeding.

The Alaska Moose Federation expects to start putting out the food by the end of the week.

We have feed for the geese in Creamers Field why not put feed there in the winter for the moose.

They do it in Swedn,Norway,Scandinavia and have no ill effects. But killing them with cars and Trains isnt natural is it. If you want moose to fill the freezer better save some.

Do they think this is the first "bad" winter that moose had to endure since they developed as a species? This is nonsense because it could affect the migratory and breeding patterns of a small group of moose putting them in greater danger of predation. They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and this is one of those instances.
