ANCHORAGE - Do you ever wonder what happens to old American flags that are too tattered to be displayed?

They are given a retirement ceremony.

The next ceremony is being held on February 22, at East Anchorage High School.

Flag retirement is a way to respectfully dispose of American flags which are too worn to be flown in front of buildings. Not all of the flags will be burned at one time.

“We have one flag, and we talk about the history, and what it's represented and then we burn the flag in a barrel with full military honors,” said Cadet Major Eric Bovee. “After everyone has vacated, the ceremony is over, we dispose of the rest of the flags.”

If you have an old flag that needs to be retired you can drop it off in boxes provided at

Moore & Sons Automotive located at 1107 E. Dimond Blvd., Anchorage; Good Friends Barber Shop, 360 Boniface Pkwy, Unit A6; Fred Meyer at 7701 DeBarr Road; Carrs Safeway at 4000 Dimond Boulevard; and VFW Post 10252, 3105 Mountain View Drive.

Great news about some good kids. And keeping up with an important ceremony and tradition.
