First "Inclusive Playground" Opens in Eagle River

EAGLE RIVER - It took nine months of planning, but Eagle River finally has what's being called a fully inclusive playground – the first in the state.

The park was officially opened Friday in Eagle River’s town square with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The purpose of the park is to encourage physical activity for all kids – whether they have developmental disabilities or not.

“We want to support families who experience disabilities, and what better way for us to play that role than to give them those tools as a family to just enjoy summer days and playgrounds and that kind of thing,” said Seth Kelly, director of Focus Inc.

Getting the park up and running was truly a community effort. About sixty people pitched in.

“It's a dream come true, it really is,” said Pam Coyne, there with her son Carson. “I mean, I wish I had this in my own backyard, but living in Eagle River and it being nearby, it is in my backyard.”

The next inclusive park will be built in Midtown Anchorage. It’s slated to open some time next year.
