ANCHORAGE - The First Friday of the month means local art galleries, boutiques and coffee shops opened their doors for different kinds of art shows.

The sounds of the Kyle Harrington Band played over endless chatter inside Her Tern Boutique.

“Tonight is all about my wife, Amanda Harrington,” said lead vocalist and guitar player Kyle Harrington.

Kyle and Amanda Harrington were the main attraction Friday night at the 8th Avenue store.

“Rarely will our arts converge, so it’s cool to be able to get behind an event like this,” said Kyle Harrington. “[We] actually get to do something together and plan something together, [and] help each other pack up.”

It was an unusual collaboration for the husband-wife duo. Their arts normally don’t go hand in hand – as Amanda Harrington works in crochet.

“I am the featured artist,” she said with a smile.

It’s been Amanda Harrington’s art that has kept them close.

“My husband and I had just started dating,” said Amanda Harrington. “I wanted to make hats because he loved beanies, and I was abroad for six months, and I was abroad for six months. We were apart, and my roommate was like ‘I will teach you.’”

They both agree that she has come along way. She said the first few hats were “pretty awful.”

“Now she just rips things out,” said Kyle Harrington. “No pattern, just off the top of her head. Like these ties.”

Amanda crocheted the entire band festive ties.

In the seven years since she made those “awful” hats for her husband, she has become a pro. He items sell at Her Tern Boutique all year round.

“I was able to feature newer items tonight and people have been excited about that.”

Another First Friday has come and gone – but the Harringtons said it's moments like these that keep them close.
