FAIRBANKS - A Fairbanks woman died in a pickup truck rollover on the Parks Highway near Healy early Sunday morning.

The driver, Margaret Stone, 51, told troopers she swerved to avoid a moose running across the highway, skidded into a ditch and rolled several times.

Her passenger, Diane Schultz, 45, was accompanying Stone to Anchorage for a medical appointment, when the accident occurred at 5 a.m. at 262 Mile.

Schultz, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected through a window and came to rest near the truck, a 2004 Ford F150. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Healy medics.

The vehicle's air bags did not deploy and Stone, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken for treatment to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers responded to another fatal crash in the same area in November, where a passenger, not wearing a seat belt was thrown from a vehicle when the driver lost control on the icy road.

In that crash, located 10 miles away at 252 Mile Parks Highway, Jeromey Ramage, 18, of North Pole, was critically injured and died a few days later.
