They are empty for now, but a bevy of bowls made by local potters will soon be filled with soup and hope.

The Anchorage Clay Arts Guild, UAA, local high schools and military members dropped off more than 1,800 of their creations at the Egan Center Wednesday.

The bowls are slated for Bean's Cafe's event planned for Saturday.

That's when, for a $20 donation, people can buy one of them and have it filled with soup and cornbread.

The annual fundraiser garners about $145,000 for the soup kitchen, but the event also serves as a way for people to get involved in their community.

"It's a delight and it’s really an honor. Sometimes, for the students, that’s their only bowl they've made all year [and] they donate it,” said Carol Weddle of the Anchorage Clay Arts Guild.

Tickets are still available at the Credit Union 1 south Anchorage branch, Cabin Fever gifts, Tastee Freeze and Kremer Chiropractic.

People will be able to pick up their bowls at the Egan Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

They need work, and health care not free meals. To keep feeding a man is to make him dependant (feed him for a day). To teach him how to fish is to feed him for a lifetime.
