ANCHORAGE - After a summer-long hiatus, the disc golf course at Westchester is open, but only for the winter. The baskets went back up Friday morning, and by the afternoon, the course was full of eager disc golfers.
“This has always been one of my favorite courses in town, and I was really bummed over the summer. Now I'm really excited to play it again,” said Sean Fallon.
“It's a great course. Good location for everyone to come play in town and it's just good to be back,” agreed Tyler Katzmar.
Anchorage Parks and Recreation staff took down the baskets last spring and closed the park for rehabilitation. Westchester is designated a winter-only course from now on to reduce wear and tear on the trails.
“With the land around here it's not a bad idea just because it does get so wet and it is so highly used. So it's good we can take the time off during the summer and let the wilderness take care of itself while we're not tromping in there,” said Kaztzmar.
Parks and Rec will take the baskets down during break-up next year. Only tournaments and other permitted events will be allowed at Westchester during the summer.
