ANCHORAGE - Construction crews on the Seward Highway started work on the first of four bridges across Campbell Creek.

Monday, two cranes moved in six girders for the first phase of the Homer Drive bridge.

Each weighs more than 80,000 pounds and, in total there will be 14 girders moved in for the bridge.

Crews will also replace the northbound, southbound and Brayton Drive bridges. Each bridge costs about two and a half million dollars.

The project engineer said once the Homer Drive bridge is finished, that will be the new route for all southbound traffic.

“Freeing up the highway of traffic is essential for a project like this to complete work,” said Max Vockner. “There's just too much traffic to work with it, so we have to detour them on homer drive.”

Construction crews will pave the Homer Drive bridge in the beginning of September. The project is expected to be finished in fall 2013.
