Fundraiser For Man Attacked By BearThe community of Nome is banding together to help a local man with his long journey of recovery after being attacked by a bear.
The family and friends of a local Nome man mauled by a bear last week held a fundraiser Saturday to help him with medical costs as he recovers from severe injuries.
Wes Perkins, 54, an experienced hunter, is known as a pillar in the Nome community, having served more than 30 years on the Nome Volunteer Fire Department, including as fire chief. Family and friends, including Darrell Vincek, said Perkins’ was always the first one to help when someone needed it. Vincek along with family friends used Facebook to help organize the fundraiser for Perkins’ road to recovery. The community donated more than 100 items to auction off at the event. “It’s just a fabulous community, and its just Alaska in general, when tragedy happens its just amazing the way people come together,” said Jeannie Fitzgerald, Wes’ sister-in-law Family members sais it’s just a small token of support for a person who has given so much to the Nome community. “It’s a family we kind of always admired, and its just good to be able to help out in a tough time because they've done it so much,” said Darrel Karp, a family friend. |
