A conference at UAA is hoping to draw young Alaskans to careers in the legal field.

The ninth annual Color of Justice conference brings students from around the state together with local judges and attorneys.

The three-day event focuses on women and minority students in the hope that more of them consider a career in law.

"We don't have a shortage of lawyers in Alaska; we have a shortage of lawyers of color, and we have a shortage of lawyers who understand issues associated with bush Alaska, with rural justice; and we have a shortage of lawyers who are willing to serve in rural areas of the state," said Deborah Periman, professor at UAA Justice Center.

Friday the students head down to the courthouse where they'll take part in a mock trial.
