Coast Guard Recruits Sworn in on FlattopANCHORAGE - While the country observed Veterans Day to honor those who have served, some Alaskans commemorated the day by joining the military. Three women were sworn into the U.S. Coast Guard during a ceremony at Flattop on Monday. Because of the holiday, Haylee Averett, Lynette Thompson and Lindy Butler were the only people sworn in, in any branch of the military, across the country. The Coast Guard said it was a unique situation because the ceremony got delayed by Hurricane Sandy, so it picked Veterans Day for the special occasion. The new recruits say they’re excited to start the next chapter of their lives. “I’m kind of following in the footsteps of all three of my brothers, it's really special. I feel proud and I think they're proud of me,” said Lindy Butler. The women left Monday afternoon for recruit training in Cape May, New Jersey. |
