Three tons of turkey – that’s what Chugach Electric Association is donating to charity this holiday season.

The state’s largest electric utility is delivering 450 turkeys to 15 local organizations, including the Food Bank of Alaska. And with the economic downturn and the increase in the number of working poor in Anchorage, officials say the donation is a welcome one.

“The need is growing,” said Susannah Morgan of the Food Bank of Alaska. “We are in fairly dark economic times, and it is really difficult for many of our families to get meals on the table. And while it’s bad to be hungry any day, it’s particularly bad to be hungry on the holidays, when you know everybody else is feasting.”

Chugach bought the turkeys at Carrs/Safeway.
