Blue summer skies returned briefly Friday afternoon just in time for hundreds to enjoy the city's Summerpalooza celebration.

Bird TLC was one of several partners that took place in the festivities at the request of the group YEP, or Youth Employment in Parks.

The group is made up of 25 Anchorage teenagers who learn leadership skills and work on parks and recreation projects this summer.

Summerpalooza is the group's final event.

It gave Anchorage kids and families another reason to get out and celebrate summer right before school begins less than two weeks from now.

Volunteers painted kids' faces, organized games and even kayaks were on hand courtesy of REI.

β€œIt's a great thing to do before school starts. Thank God it turned sunny! I mean, it was pouring rain this morning and it's just a great celebration,” said Diane Kelly who brought her grandchildren to Summerpalooza. She said the celebration is β€œa wonderful thing for the city to do,” especially toward the end of the summer for kids.

The YEP program is sponsored by the Anchorage Park Foundation and Anchorage Parks and Recreation.
