Bike Safety Improves in AnchorageHelmets play major role in bicycle safetyRelated Content
ANCHORAGE - Every day thousands of Alaskans choose to hop on two wheels for their daily commute. Many are prepared for the worst and wear a helmet. Anchorage police say, so far bike vs. car collisions have been down; with more than half the year behind us we've had 43 compared to 77 in 2011. And police say we've had zero bike deaths, compared to two last year. They hope the downward trend will continue. One reason this is happening, bike safety advocates say, is the use of helmets. Anyone under age 16 is required by law to wear one while riding on streets and trails According to a national highway traffic safety study, nearly 70 percent of fatal bicycle crashes involve head injuries. Helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent. But most importantly, advocates say it's about awareness so that we can all share the road safely. |

Maybe it is because cyclists have realized that they are not invincible and actually stop at the sidewalk crossings?

Share the Road , Yea right . As your sitting at red light's watching a bike rider run thru every stop light all the way down Northern Lights . 2 mile down the road , He is flip'n people off for not giving him the right-a-way . The sad part is , Is people do this every day and our police force seem's to ignor it .....I am supprised there are not more death's ....

Of course its going to improve, the dumb ones got run over, means less dumb one on the street, Do the math. ever notice how they blow through stop signs , well once run over thier goners, less dumb ones on bikes, then thier other dumb counterparts see what happens right in front of them, they learn to obey the laws of the road, its a win win for drivers and dumb ones on bikes.

I don't bike in Anchorage traffic anymore. With the threats and intimidation, it's just not worth it. BTW, a "bike trail" is not a trail if you have to stop at a crosswalk every 100 yards. How would you like driving if you had to stop at every light (red or green) and press a button?
