Bed Bugs Crawling All Over AnchoragePest control company has responded to over 100 calls about bed bugs since JanuaryANCHORAGE - Bed bugs keep Ken Perry busy. “From August to May, I handle 2 to 5 calls a day from around the state,” said Perry, the general manager for Pied Piper Pest Control. Since the beginning of the year the company’s responded to more than 100 calls about infestations. “Some infestations we go into, they're so bad they're climbing on the walls. You walk in and there's bed bugs all over the walls and you know they have a very serious problem,” said Perry. One tenant in the Park View complex on Ninth and Karluk says she’s had an issue with bed bugs and worries about them coming back. “I'm always concerned especially when people have them real bad and they come into your house because they cling to clothing because you have to wash all your clothing and everything down in your apartment,” said Barbara Guthrie. Property managers say there’s an isolated incident at that complex with bed bugs in three units right next to each other. They say they’re working with tenants to address the problem. Managers say it’s up to tenants to report bed bugs, but the property management company will pay for the exterminator. Tenants are responsible for stripping their beds and washing their clothes, but managers say they get free laundry to help. Exterminators say bed bugs aren’t just an issue in Anchorage. “The problem has spread so badly and it's mostly among the people who can't afford anything. I'm also getting a lot of calls from the Bush. People who've come to Anchorage and stayed in hotels that had problems and now they've got bed bugs in their little communities. They can't afford to have an expert go out and service it.” Exterminators say there are a few things you can do to prevent bed bugs. Protect your luggage if you go on vacation by covering it with plastic bags and make sure to bug-proof your home as much as you can by using protective plastic covers on your box spring. |

I just got a call from my daughter who is staying at the Howard Johnson hotel and told me this morning at 3am woke up to bedbugs all over her bed and her friends bed. They are trying to get reimburse for their stay so they could find another hotel hopefully Sheraton has no bed bugs and they are not booked. What do you do when they don't want to reimburse you and have to stay at the hotel you booked at? What the heck? Are they taking care of this problem? Thanks for listening and I hope you are able to tell people who go to Anchorage which hotels have taken care of the bed bug problem.

so you think bedbugs avoid Fairbanks? They hitchhike.

I note that the motel I worked at has severe infestations of Roaches, Bed Bugs, and who knows what. They do not provide clean bedding for people who stay over or monthly and avoid washing blankets and bed spreads. They purchase their beds at Salvation Army and are unresponsive to customer complaints, their job is to collect money and kick people out early and that's about it. I would avoid sleeping under the spread and keep everything in your closed luggage and minimize the time you stay. Yes, the city needs to crack down on these cheap motels that they know about as is it a health problem for the entire state. Getting rid of the bugs it incredibly hard to do when the walls are full of them, and then they ride to your home when you visit the motel or in case of No Visitors Allowed, when the hotel guest visits you.

Many of my calls do come from the rural native community as a result of someone staying I Anchorage and taking BB home. Fortunately, most of our hotels respond responsibly when they find a problem. UNFORTUNATELY, there are some that do not.

protecting your luggage with plastic bags, really help, when you DON'T ever open them. I'm sure TSA is going to NOT open your bags then.

The City of Anchorage needs to crack down on the Hotels that don't take care of their bed bug problem. Or AFN will move to Fairbanks permanently.
