ANCHORAGE - The city's homeless community has lost a long time champion. Bean's Café executive director Jim Crockett died early Thursday morning.
Crockett was 63 years old, and ran Bean's Café for ten years –before that he was an active volunteer.
He passed away after being hospitalized for pneumonia.
He also was key in creating the Children's Lunchbox, which provides meals to kids in the Anchorage area.
Beans’ chairperson, Leslie Ellis, said the whole community will miss him.
“The family at Bean's Café lost a wonderful friend, and just really caring and compassionate human being, but the community lost an advocate for those who don't usually have an advocate,” Ellis said.
Crockett is survived by two children.
Memorial service plans will be announced in the next few days.
