"Awareness Month" Overload
ANCHORAGE - In stores and on TV, it’s hard to miss all the signs that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“NFL football players wearing pink. Pink everywhere, absolutely everywhere,” said Bradley Lewkowkitz.
Even the Alaska Aces played their home opener on a rosey-hued rink to support the cause. While breast cancer may be the most well known cause in October, it’s not the only one. Domestic Violence Prevention is also a big one.
But did you know October is also designated:
National Book Month
National Work & Family Month
CyberSecurity Awareness Month
Filipino American History Month
LGBT History Month
Bullying Prevention Month
Physical Therapy Month
American Pharmacists Month
Polish American Heritage Month
National Spina Bifida Awareness Month
National Child Health Day
Healthy Lung & Clean Air Month
National Family Sexuality Education Month
National Dental Hygiene Month
National Down Syndrome Awareness Month
“Actually I'm unaware of almost all of these,” said Lewkowitz.
“Some of them I've never heard of. Polish American Heritage Month, I've never heard of that and I'd like to know more about it,” said Charlotte Phelps.
For some the list is a little overwhelming.
“If you're looking for a cause to support it's kind of hard to choose one because they're all important,” said Phelps.
Lewkowitz agrees. “I'm learning how to read and I'm polish and I'm engage to a Filipino woman, it's a very daunting task to pick just one.”
Awareness doesn’t end at the end of the month; November is also Diabetes Awareness Month, Lung Cancer Month and Prostate Cancer Month as well.
