Tis the season for bird watching at the Alaska Chapter of the Audobon Society. Every year Alaskan bird watchers bundle up and get together to do the Christmas holiday bird count.

Volunteers select a day to conduct the count, between December 14 and January 5. They have 24 hours to record as many birds as possible in a 15-mile radius.

Audobon volunteers participate in counts in all 50 states, and in all Canadian provinces and South American countries.

This year Tok and Prudhoe Bay were the first counts in the Christmas bird count window.

Organizers say there are more birds than you might expect in Alaska in the winter. Last year 1,009 observers tallied 152 species and more than 134,000 individual birds.
