Oct. 2 is Hispanic Heritage Day, and hundreds of Alaskans of every culture gathered at the Anchorage Museum to celebrate.

“I think it’s beautiful, being Hispanic-American myself, that every culture comes and sees our culture, our traditions and what we live day-to-day,” said Katherine Forest, a member of the local dance group Tierra Columbiana.

Sunday’s event featured music, dancing by Tierra Columbiana and a variety of other groups, and booths where kids and adults could try their hand at traditional crafts.

“We also want to really keep it to our traditions, and what our folklore is,” Forest said.

Visitors flocked to a table featuring papel picado: traditional, tissue paper decorations with cut out designs in a rainbow of colors.

“They get the glue and scissors in their hands, and the paper, and then the parents are right there just as excited. It’s a good time for everybody,” said Stephanie Cullers, who spent the afternoon teaching the craft to museum visitors.

The mission of the Anchorage Museum is to “open new worlds” and build community.

Sunday, that’s exactly what it did.
