ANCHORAGE - Alzheimer's disease or related dementia affects an entire community – your community.

More than 6,000 Alaskans are living with it, and another 30,000 are taking care of them.

All month long, the Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska is offering memory screenings, open houses and events throughout Alaska as part of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.

This year the agency is doing a special contest called “Memories Through My Eyes.”

It’s a writing contest open to all ages about what memories mean to each of us. There are tons of prizes, with the grand prize being 40,000 Alaska Airline miles.

Although there is no cure, the key is awareness. "To be aware of their neighbors, their family members… the people that they love that they are caring for. That Alzheimer’s disease is prevalent in Alaska. There is help. But we can all do it together. The more that we are aware, the better we can help those people that are affected,” said Lisa Warzonek of the Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska.

We here at KTVA are doing our part to help with a series called “Caring for Your Parents.”

Every Thursday night during the 10 p.m. edition of CBS 11 News, we take a look at issues such as Alzheimer’s facing our older parents.
