Wildlife troopers from the Mat-Su valley spent the Sunday afternoon investigating a dead moose found in the wooded area behind the Sullivan arena. Although the area is municipality land, moose are considered a state resource, which is why the animal deaths have to be investigated.

Alaska State Troopers say this time of year more moose are found dead than normal, and each time they have to treat it like a possible poaching case, even if the moose died of natural causes.

State Trooper Thomas Akeokok said, “This time of the year, usually the moose that have had a hard winter, they lack the nutrition.”

“And this time of year gives them a false sense of security that the days are getting longer and warmer and then quit eating.”

To report a dead moose, call Alaska State Troopers at 907-269-5511. Troopers ask the public to treat it like a crime scene and stay away until they investigate.
