ASD Seeks Expulsion For Student Who Brought Gun On School Bus

A 19-year-old Anchorage student was arrested Wednesday morning for bringing a loaded gun on a school bus. Bryan Briggs had just arrived for his morning classes at the King Career Center when officials say he was getting off the bus and a gun fell out of his pocket. He quickly stuffed it back inside but not before the bus driver spotted it and called security.

Briggs was escorted to the principal's office where he admitted having a loaded .22-caliber revolver. He told authorities he'd been carrying the weapon for several days as protection against someone he feared in his neighborhood who was not a student.

District Superintendent Carol Comeau says students and staff at both high schools were notified immediately after Briggs was taken into custody. Calls were also made to parents to tell them what had happened.

Comeau is urging parents to have a conversation with their students about the importance of reporting anything that seems suspicious to adults. She also says weapons in any form will not be tolerated.

Because Bryan Briggs is 19 years old he has been charged as an adult. He is facing a misdemeanor charge of weapons misconduct. The district says it will also begin the process to expel him.
