In 2009 The Alaska Ice Climbing Festival began to promote the sport of ice climbing and its 2011 event kicked off Friday.

Festivities this weekend will take place in Portage and Anchorage and will include slide shows, auctions, climbing clinics and a climbing competition.

Event organizers’ long-term goal for the festival is to hold a world cup competition in Anchorage and build a permanent ice climbing park in southcentral Alaska.

“I enjoy promoting the sport and getting other people out there aware of this great opportunity to celebrate winter in Alaska,” said Jayme Mack, Alaska Ice Climbing Festival executive director.
