The dispute between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 367 has lasted more than a year, and now the Anchorage Assembly is stepping into the fight.

Wednesday, the body approved a resolution urging municipal officials and union representatives to come to an agreement on a new labor contract by November 10.

The contract, which covers Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility workers, expired last year.

Several weeks ago, a federal arbitrator stepped in to expedite the negotiations, but the final contract recommendation was ultimately rejected by the Assembly.

The situation escalated when union members voted to strike late last week, and came to a head when a district judge handed down an injunction barring them from doing so.

Now, assembly members are asking both parties to reach an agreement without further court involvement.

A hearing between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 367 is scheduled for November 10.
