Feds Deny AGPA Gas Export Application

JUNEAU — Federal regulators have dismissed the Alaska Gasline Port Authority’s application for a license to export natural gas to Asian markets, calling the application “deficient.”

A March 7 letter from the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy said AGPA’s application lacked necessary details about the pipeline, where it would get gas and where an export facility would be located.

The letter leaves room for AGPA to resubmit an application if it can satisfactorily answer those questions.

AGPA, which was created by Fairbanks North Star Borough and Valdez in 1999, made the initial application last summer and announced it had received numerous letters of interest from Asian companies interested in buying Alaska gas.

The feds asked for additional details about the pipeline, gas sources and the export facility. AGPA wrote a letter back, but the feds still found the response unsatisfactory.

“In any future long-term LNG export application, DOE will require the location of the liquefaction facility, demonstration that the applicant has secured a property or contractual right in the facility and use of the facility, and that the facility has access to a source of natural gas supply that is within the power of the applicant or the facility to secure,” the letter said.

A press release from AGPA said it was disappointed by the dismissal, but said it provides a “roadmap” forward.

tell the feds to stick it. its our resource, and our livelihood, make it without their approval if need be. we are citizens of Alaska first. feds don't realize we are near enough our own country and should not have to beg for our resources
