You might think Halloween would be a favorite holiday for dentists, but one Anchorage orthodontist says he'd rather kids not eat too many treats.

Dr. Devin Johnson is taking part in a candy buy back program that will pay children a dollar per pound for unopened candy.

The collected candy is then shipped to a national charity that boxes it up in care packages and sends it to soldiers serving overseas.

Johnson calls it a win-win-win situation for everyone, himself included.

“For us, it's kind of self-serving because a lot of the candies that people get can damage the braces and prolong treatment,” he said.

Dr. Johnson will be accepting unopened Halloween candy Tuesday at his south Anchorage practice from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The buy back price is one dollar per pound of candy.
