More than one hundred kids entered, but only one could win the annual Kids’ Pink Salmon Derby in Valdez.

Kids cast from boats and lined the shores of Allison Point, waiting with bated breath to catch the big one. But in the end it was 9-year-old Anchorage resident Westley Eastham and his 6.04-pound salmon that took home top honors.

And this isn’t Westley’s first time competing in the derby. The young angler was poised for first place last year when another kid reeled in a larger fish at the last minute.

How did he land the prize-winning fish? Being in the right place at the right time.

“I just cast out by a school of fish and then I just let the reel jerk. I missed all the little fish but I hit that big one,” said Westley.

He won a longboard skateboard and a five-year subscription to Fish Alaska Magazine, and of course, bragging rights for the next year.
