ANCHORAGE - The Rondy spirit was strong Saturday at Hilltop ski area, where teams hit the slopes for an untraditional winter sport. The Fur Rondy bed races gave Alaskans young and old a chance to slide down the hill on plastic-wrapped mattresses, smashing into hay bales and plastic safety nets at the finish line. Team members say it's all about holding on tight, but there are a *few* tricks too. "Running, definitely running. And everyone stay on, i had to learn that the hard way. And don't hit the hay bales so we don't run over it again," said one winning team winner in the junior division. Also today at Fur Rondy it wasn't just beds racing today, some mobile bathrooms were also in on the action. Saturday was the annual outhouse races. Participants used their creative skills to make a portable potty that would smoke the competition. There were four divisions: unlimited, traditional, youth, and ladies of the throne, with trophies for 1st through 3rd in each division and cash prizes for 1st place in each division. Prizes were given away for the best theme, most colorful, people's choice, cleanest, most realistic, best engineered, and best architecture. But at the end of the day it is all about winning the race. The outhouse races are presented by the UAA and engineering club to raise funds for their charitable work. |
