Fur Rondy Snow Sculptures Finished, On Display (2012)
Artists used a multitude of implements

ANCHORAGE - After a week of hard labor, the carvers at the Fur Rondy snow sculpture competition have finally laid down their tools.

The annual competition gives Alaskans a chance to turn a block of snow into anything their imagination can conjure up, and at 10 a.m. Sunday the sculptures were judged based on creativity and crowd appeal.

Carvers said they used kitchen implements, garden tools and any household items they could get their hands on to craft their masterpieces, but sometimes the hardest parts are the finishing touches.

"The difficult part was showing up and finishing this morning cause I’m really tired, this is lots of work. Ask anyone who does this, it's lots of work – upper body," said sculptor Speareo Stephens.

The sculptures will be displayed for the next week off of Ship Creek Avenue across the street from the Comfort Inn.
