New refuge manager begins job in Bethel

By Associated Press 2:01 PM July 29, 2014
BETHEL, Alaska (AP) –

The massive Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge has a new manager from Louisiana to oversee nearly 20 million acres of wetlands, river and tundra habitat in Alaska.

Neil Lalonde had not been to Alaska until he stepped off a ferry earlier this summer.

KYUK (http://is.gd/pWhVwr) says Lalonde has been on his new job for just over a month.

He has worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and served as manager of the Delta, Breton and Bayou Savage national wildlife refuges in southeastern Louisiana.

Lalonde replaces Gene Peltola Jr., who left the refuge last year to run the Office of Subsistence Management in Anchorage as assistant regional director for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Acting refuge managers have filled in since Peltola’s departure.
