The two lost their way due to heavy snowfall
ANCHORAGE – A Juneau man and his grandson were rescued after they got lost and disoriented while hunting Monday afternoon.
Dean Epperson, 66, and his 12-year-old grandson Cullen Corrigan lost their way due to heavy snowfall around Fish Creek Road near the Eaglecrest Ski Area in Juneau, according to a troopers report.
Emergency dispatch in Juneau was able to get GPS coordinates from Epperson’s cell phone. Wildlife troopers used that information to pinpoint his vehicle, which enabled them to narrow the search area, the report said.
Juneau Mountain Rescue volunteers and Southeast Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search (SEADOGS) began their search around 5 p.m. and found the Epperson and Cullen about two hours later. They were not injured and were able to safely return to their vehicle.
A winter weather advisory is in effect in Juneau from 6 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
