A man was flown to a hospital for treatment Tuesday evening after he accidentally shot himself at the Alaska State Fair, authorities said.
According to Jon Owen — director of the Palmer Department of Public Safety — the man, his wife and children had left the fair and were in a parking lot near the equestrian entrance when the accidental shot was fired. The man, who was not identified, was taking his handgun out of a holster to stow in a car door when he shot himself in the pelvic area, Owen said.
The incident was reported to police just before 7 p.m., Owen said. Police, medics and fire personnel responded and the man was airlifted to a hospital.
An update on the man’s condition was not available as of 8:30 p.m. Firearms are not allowed on fair property, according to the state fair’s website.
