Lt. gov. candidates make their cases to Anchorage business leaders

By Megan Mazurek 8:17 PM May 5, 2014
ANCHORAGE –

Candidates running for the job of lieutenant governor addressed issues like education and energy policies at a Make it Monday forum.

State Sen. Hollis French and Mat-Su math teacher Bob Williams are running for the Democratic ticket. State Sen. Lesil McGuire and Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan are running against each other in the Republican primary.

All four candidates said they oppose the legalization of marijuana, but stuck to party lines when it came to the issue of repealing the current oil tax structure implemented at the beginning of the year.

“I see the future of the North Slope as very, very bright given the current tax incentives,” Sullivan said.

McGuire, who worked in the Legislature to pass the oil tax law, said she plans to continue working alongside Gov. Sean Parnell in his administration.

“In this case you’ve got one person sitting at this table that has a proven track record of working alongside this governor,” McGuire said.

Williams used his inexperience with the administration as his strength.

“I don’t have a long track record of working with Parnell,” he said. “Because I believe with every fiber of my being, he needs to be replaced.”

All four candidates had their own ideas in how the state’s education system could improve at the elementary through university level.

“You’ve got to spend the money,” French said. “It would be nice to be able to do it on the cheap, but it’s absolutely impossible to create a first-class university system on the cheap.”

The primary is Aug. 19.
