Ketchikan man arrested for sexual abuse of a minor

By Hope Miller 4:27 PM May 30, 2014
ANCHORAGE –

A 43-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly sexually abused a young girl for more than two years.

Friday morning, Ketchikan police served an arrest warrant on Jonathan Hayward for sexual crimes committed in Juneau and Ketchikan. He’s accused of sexually abusing a now-7-year-old girl, the Juneau Police Department said in a statement. The abuse is believed to have started when the girl was 5.

Hayward is charged with five counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor, which is an unclassified felony. He is also charged with four counts of unlawful exploitation of a minor and 10 counts of possessing child pornography — both of which are felonies.

Investigators are combing through multiple electronic devices of Hayward’s and additional charges are expected as the searches continue in Anchorage.

The reason the case was brought to Juneau police’s attention in April is because the girl “made a spontaneous disclosure in front of a medical provider,” the JPD statement said.

The medical provider made a complaint to the Office of Children’s Services, and that department then contacted law enforcement.

According to an affidavit, the girl said she had told an adult about the abuse before talking with the medical provider, but the adult did not notify authorities.

In 2011, Hayward was charged with failing to register as a sex offender, court records show.
