Jonrowe cites brutal conditions as reason for pulling out

By Dave Detling 11:20 PM March 4, 2014

DeeDee Jonrowe had previously expressed safety concerns

ANCHORAGE - Veteran musher DeeDee Jonrowe is out of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

The Willow-based musher scratched from this year’s race Tuesday morning following a rough ride through the Dalzell Gorge between the checkpoints of Rainy Pass and Rohn.

According to trail officials, Jonrowe took a few nasty spills, losing her team three times through the gorge.

Two weeks ago Jonrowe told KTVA she was concerned about the conditions of the trail.

“I know how bad bad can be and I’m not just concerned about the first 80 miles,” she said. “I’m concerned about the backside of the Alaska Range and across the Farewell Burn as well.”

Jonrowe has completed 29 Iditarods and is frequently one of the first 10 mushers to pass under the burled arch in Nome.
