Janay DeLoach traveled over 5,900 miles from her home in Fort Collins, Colorado to Rio de Janeiro to compete in this year’s Olympics. She’ll leave Rio about an inch short. It’s a long way to return after missing out on the finals of the women’s long jump.
DeLoach placed 13th with a best score of 6.50 meters, or 21 feet and 3.905 inches, a shade behind Great Britain’s Jazmin Sawyers’ 6.53, or 21 feet and 5.08 inches. The top 12 advance to the finals on Wednesday at Olympic Stadium, meaning there will be no repeat for the Eielson High School graduate. She entered with high hopes, having won the bronze medal four years ago in London.
DeLoach’s American teammates Brittney Reese and Tianna Bartoletta each qualified, easily finishing third and fifth respectively.
