Weather welcome sight in the interior
ANCHORAGE – Rain and cooler temperatures were a welcome sight today in the state’s Interior, especially for those battling wildfires. Nearly 800 firefighters are working on the Stuart Creek 2 fire that is threatening two communities off of Chena Hot Springs Road.
Better weather conditions have allowed firefighters to work on building a protective barrier on the north and western flank of the fire in an effort to keep it from spreading. Right now the blaze has charred more than 84,000 acres and is considered 22 percent controlled.
But while weather conditions are favorable today, they aren’t expected to last. Fire information officials in Fairbanks say the weekend is calling for temperatures in the low 80s and windier conditions.
Residents are allowed in their homes in the danger zone today but have been warned they should be prepared to evacuate with very little notice if the fire increases substantially over the weekend.
