In Wasilla, school bus overturns following Friday morning freezing rain
ANCHORAGE – Police and transportation officials urge Alaskan drivers to use extreme caution after ice and freezing rain sent hundreds of vehicles off roadways Friday morning.
Wasilla police said a school bus carrying 14 children overturned off of Knik-Goose Bay Road: Nobody was injured. Police said the road was in “critical” condition, and Lucille, Lucas and Nelson roads were all closed because of the ice.
Officers said “hundreds” of calls from drivers in distress continued to flood in as of 9:45 a.m. Matanuska-Susitna Borough officials ask drivers to stay off the roads if possible.
In Anchorage, state transportation officials warn of black ice, freezing rain and road surf on Elmore Road, Hillside Drive, Abbott Road, Upper Huffman Road, Rabbit Creek Road and other thoroughfares across South Anchorage.
