House passes proposed amendment on transportation

By Associated Press 7:55 AM March 14, 2014

The proposal would dedicate transportation user fees and taxes to the fund.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – The Alaska House has passed a proposed constitutional amendment that would establish a transportation infrastructure fund.

HJR10 passed 34-4. Because it is a proposed constitutional change, it required a two-thirds vote of the 40-member House to pass, or 27 votes.

A similar proposal passed the House in 2012 before stalling in the Senate.

The proposal would dedicate transportation user fees and taxes to the fund.

Supporters called it smart planning and a way to help maintain infrastructure in the future. But questions also have been raised about whether it’s wise to dedicate funds rather than keep money fluid.
