Unconscious Hiker Rescued From Steep Cliff in Cordova

According to Alaska State Troopers, a 38-year-old Washington resident fell 200 feet down a mountain and landed on the edge of a cliff.

Another weekend accident leaves a man with life threatening injuries. Alaska State Troopers say a man hiking in Cordova fell off a cliff and had to be rescued.

At around 5 p.m. on Friday, troopers received a report of the injured hiker.

Officers say 38-year-old Paul Rohweder of Bellingham, Washington, was hiking with three friends near Heeney Ridge when he fell 200 feet down a rocky mountain and landed on the edge of another cliff.

Rohweder was reported as unconscious and having difficulty breathing.

And, despite being stuck on a steep cliff, rescue teams were able to reach him.

“They were able to recover him, stabilize him and transport him to Cordova Medical Center. He was later to transported to Anchorage and it was reported that he was suffering from life threatening injuries,” said trooper spokeswoman Beth Ipsen.
