ALASKA- Senators are joining the Alaska Delegation in asking the Air Force to put a hold on plans to move fighter jets from Fairbanks to Anchorage.

The chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Michigan Democrat Carl Levin, is demanding Defense Secretary Leon Panetta stop the move.

Levin sent a letter to DoD Secretary Panetta Wednesday detailing their objections to the Air Force's restructuring plan.

Alaska's delegation claims the Air Force does not understand the fiscal impact moving the F-16's would have on Fairbanks and Anchorage.

Panetta and McCain say the Air Force should stop its plans to move the jets because the senate is still wrangling over the deficit reduction bill and a budget - both of which would have a big impact on any restructuring plans.

I'm glad that our senators and two of the top power brokers in the senate know better how to manage Air Force assets than the Air Force brass. Maybe we would not be 16 trillion in debt if the senate could do things smarter as the military tries to do My only complaint--raterh than paying down the debt, the military makes a pint of spending the savings at the end of the year

The fiscal impact should not be a factor in the decision. The needs of the US Air Force are what matters in troop and asset deployment.
