Tenants Receive Settlement from Weidner PropertiesTenants complained fees were unreasonably highANCHORAGE - Anchorage property owner Weidner Investment Services settled with tenants for $400,000 dollars. In an interview with KTVA in March of 2011, the lawyer representing the tenants, Ryain Fortson said, "People are fed up, they want what's fair... Weidner has a practice of cheating tenants whenever they can." Northern Justice Project represented three tenants. After the settlement, they sent out court documents to former tenants along with a form they could fill out and return to claim money they were overcharged. Under the new guidelines both sides agreed to, the price of a light bulb went from $3.50 to $3. Cleaning and carpet cleaning charges were also reduced. Though this settlement may just mean a few dollars for tenants, it could set a precedent for Anchorage residents overall. The settlement is for renters who moved out between September of 2007 and June of 2012 – most of them probably received paperwork in the mail. If not, the Northern Justice Project is taking account of overcharges. The phone number is 264-6634. |
