Teacher’s Union Unhappy with Proposed School District Cuts100 jobs face the axe to cover $25 million shortfallANCHORAGE - The Anchorage School District superintendent is looking at cutting 100 jobs to make up for a $25 million budget shortfall. Governor Sean Parnell’s budget for school districts across the state did not include an increase in the amount of money schools get per student. “I’m from a state that went through major reductions because of the economy,” said Anchorage School District Superintendent Jim Browder. “Fortunately for us here in Alaska, it's just now starting to hit us because of our distance, and the revenue that's been coming has made it so that we haven't had to make huge reductions like other states in the nation.” “The legislature is not funding education,” said Anchorage Education Association President Andy Holleman. “It's basically holding it flat. They want to see more programs; they want to see more things happen with the same money. We think that, unfortunately, we're thinking of cutting things that are working pretty well right now.” The governor's budget isn't final. The legislature could change the funding for schools during this session. |

" did not include an increase in the amount of money schools get per student" Kinda of left out how much it is now in the article. They should be cutting all the made up "support" jobs and investing it wiser on the children.

Let the students and their parents make the decision and find the resources for SAT studying and checking out colleges. Teacher have their nose and thumb on students, stop being parents. And yes there are kids that don't have parents caring enough, the internet is there.

When I went to school, the counselors were the ones that helped students with their college applications, etc. We did not have specific counselors for "graduation". There are a lot more principals now in the schools now also. We had two, the principal, and the Vice-Principal. A lot of things have changed, and I don't think for the better. High school students used to be able to choose their classes, and teachers. They no longer do. I brought this up to a counselor once, and she said the schools are too large to do so now. Not so, my high school was 5-7 times larger than the ones here in Anchorage. My freshman class had over 1000 students in it.

Since they have had all this overhead has grades gone up? Has the drop out rate change? Are you honestly going to tell anyone this is money well spent? Cut and cut deeper. drop another 50 million at least.

Hope they don't cut the guy/gal that shovels the walkways...oh, that's right, they don't do that do they. So much for paying for janitorial services and equipment. Sorry, but when the cost of running the school district costs more than running the city...we have a problem.

Here is a thought for you: "If being an educator is such a great deal, how come you all aren't doing it?"
