“Strength in unity” is the theme of this year's Alaska Federation of Natives Convention.

Through a series of dialogues, convention organizers hope to foster an environment of open discussion among the Alaska Native community.

“We have a lot to battle with all the time, but we are always putting ourselves down,” said Ralph Goos’k’ Wolfe, a member of the Yakutat Tlingit tribe.

The talks include tackling issues of Alaska's First People, including concerns of community division and a feeling that their collective voice has been silenced.

“It puts us in the place of seeming like we're victims,” said Rep. Reggie Joule, D-Kotzebue.

What makes this discussion so unique is that it takes place between leaders both young and old from all parts of the state, as well as village residents and Alaska Native corporations.

The audience gave input through an automated system, which allowed participants to voice their community priorities. The plan is to use the dialogue in meetings with tribal leaders, native corporations, and state and federal officials.
