With the goal to stop sexual assaults and rapes against Alaska Native women, one group is taking matters into their own hands taking the fight straight to the source.

It’s not your typical group you would see out on the town on a Friday night. They are a collection of victims, advocates, police officers and every day folks including a former public safety commissioner.

A group of volunteers whose mission is simple: Spread the message about sexual assault and rapes and how people can be protected.

Alaska leads the nation in the sexual assault and rape; Alaska Native women are the highest-targeted population. One statistic indicates that one-third of Alaska Native women can expect to be raped in their lifetime.

That is exactly why this meet and greet group is hitting the streets of downtown Anchorage, going from bar to bar to get out as much information as they can to let people know there is help if they need it.

The group's intent is about going into an environment of sex, drinking and alcohol to give women, specifically Alaska Native women, the tools they need to protect themselves while having a good time.

However, it was a message not everyone was ready to hear. Several bars denied the group access because sexual assault awareness on a weekend would be bad for business.

This is something that's not holding back these volunteers' goal to stop the cycle of sexual violence and instead turn it into a tool of empowerment to be safe from any harm.

As sexual assaults and rapes continue to occur, the mission of knowledge will keep on going.
