Seward Celebrates the Fourth of JulySEWARD – The Mount Marathon race was a wet and slippery one for more than 600 runners who dared to make the 3,000-foot climb. It takes a tough mind and body to make the trek. “It was like one step up and two steps down. You had to crawl your way through the bushes to keep going up. And then down was rock, over snow so you would take a few steps and slide to it was pretty exciting, pretty fun,” said 17-year-old Tsania Mahlen. “You have to step up and really try. It's a very worthy race,” said competitor Jean LaBonte who also races with her daughter and husband. Many of the ladies came off the mountain covered in mud, with scrapes on their elbows and their knees were dripping blood. Women said this race shows they’re just as rugged as the men. Even though it’s a competition racers said sometimes it takes a team effort to make it. “There was one case going up the mountain, I lost my footing, and started sliding back and two ladies came to my rescue. Slowed them down, but they helped me right up the hill. And it's all about teamwork. “One lady said I love this race! It's a good female camaraderie race,” said Mary Beth Koster. Runners said it was a great race despite the slippery slope and they can’t wait to return next year. They just hope the rain stays away. For the complete list of results click here.

@EPA, "Will shut this down soon", Really? Maybe you should just go back to wherever you came from. People like you just need to leave our great state and go crawl back into your hole in the lower 48 where SOMEONE might care about what you have to say,it is obvious that YOU are not an Alaskan.

EPA your being on the computer is using electricity that leaves a carbon footprint. You really care about streams and nature, do us a favor, stay off your computer. The rest of us with a little common sense will continue to enjoy and celebrate our Freedom on the 4th of July. Thank God and our Troops that make this sort of event possible. And FYI there are streams in Deep creek that run right through coal deposits and have been for thousands of years, didn't seem to be the cause for the low salmon counts.

EPA, you're an idiot. If that is the case, then we need to hunt out ALL animals, that make trails and that would be considered scaring of nature. Hell, we might as well as wipe out everything along the river beds, because the trees fall into the salmon streams, causing muddy/silty waters, which causes breathing problems for the fish as well. Need to kill off all the bears too, for they cause erosion of the streams, because of their digging, walking, and...oh...fishing for food. EPA, you are an erosion on the human race, and need to stop. Idiot. You're lucky I don't know who you are, because you need to be slapped on the forehead for being a moron. Think, before you talk/type.

Will shut this down soon. I'm going to report this race. I can't believe this scaring of nature is allowed. Causes erosion into salmon streams and coal dust that was settled down now into the air and loosened and washed into local streams. This needs to stop.
