Public Comment Begins on Land Use Code

Title 21 being discussed at assembly meetings

ANCHORAGE - What should Anchorage look like as it grows into a bigger city? That was what the Anchorage Assembly was trying to figure out during the rewrite of the laws of how land should be used. This new set of laws and codes is known as Title XXI.

The over 600 pages of code is complicated. The process of rewriting these laws has been going on for over a decade.

Last night, the community had a chance to weigh in. Assembly Chair Ernie Hall explained the basic goal of the code: "to give us a city that we all want to live and work and play in."

It covers everything from where people can build to how tall buildings can be. Hall said a point of contention could come from people who don't understand the code. "I think that there's a lot of confusion about what happened with the rewrite that occurred."

Those from the other side, like Greg Stoddard, agreed. "I'm convinced that people that want to pass it don't understand it," he said.

Still Hall said it's the discussion that's important. "What I saw happening here was what we dream of in a democracy – a lot of sitting down and negotiating and finding middle ground."

That discussion will continue through the end of the month and likely into February before the assembly votes on a final decision.

They should be more concerned about dang street names changing 3 times while you are still on the same road more than how many windows I have.
