Planned Parenthood RallyPro-choice supporters showed up in downtown Anchorage for a Planned Parenthood rally on Saturday.Pro-choice supporters showed up in downtown Anchorage for a Planned Parenthood rally on Saturday. This comes after the United States Senate voted to make huge funding cuts for the national organization last Wednesday. Alaska Planned Parenthood officials say the rally is just part of their fight to keep over $300 million in federal funding, which they claim is crucial to protecting the health of women. If the budget cuts go through, Planned Parenthood officials say more than 9,000 Alaskan women stand to lose important reproductive health services. “I have used Planned Parenthood services before when I was a young college student,” said Planned Parenthood supporter Paige Hodson. “For low income women, they provide a great resource in providing low cost health services.” Now more then ever, Planned Parenthood officials say getting the message out about what their organization does is important, especially with federal funding cuts looming. “Planned Parenthood is here to provide prevention and life saving resources for Alaskan women,” said Clover Simon, Spokesperson for Planned Parenthood Great North West. “By cutting our funding, you are not decreasing the abortion rate; you are actually making it higher. When women don't have access to birth control methods, they are more likely to suffer from an unintended pregnancy.” Planned Parenthood officials say more than 90 percent of their services are about insuring women have access to birth control, cancer screenings, and anything needed to take care of their reproductive health. However, those who are against federal funding for the private organization say taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for abortions. “There are 7,000 federally funded health care clinics across the United States in comparison to Planned Parenthood’s 800,” said Bernadette Wilson, Spokesperson for the Alaska Family Council. “They provide extensive STD screening, they provide mammograms for women they provides contraceptives, all the things that Planned Parenthood provides, except for the abortions,” Wilson said. The Alaska Family Council says it’s disheartening to see so many in support of what it calls a corrupt business. “Pro-choice, pro-life, whatever it may be, Americans agree that they do not want their tax dollars subsidizing a cooperation which is shown to be dangerous and corrupt,” Wilson said. “One in every 10 procedures that they do there is an abortion.” Some, who may support the proposed cuts to Planned Parenthood, drove by the rally in a truck sporting a giant sign showing an aborted fetus, but it did little to stop the rally. Planned parenthood officials say the rally was also held to show their appreciation for Senators Mark Begich and Lisa Murkowski, who have opposed the proposed federal funding cuts.

Its just sickening to see people going there to support a "choice" to kill an innocent baby. They will all be in my prayers tonight.

Its a shame to see this is all people can get out and protest for. Forget the corrupt Socialist Unions bribing our politicians, cheating the election process, cops raping women and children. What a shame.

Abortion doesn't really sadden me. What's really heartbreaking are the news reports about infants being beaten/starved to death by women who weren't meant to be mothers but were forced to give birth. The statisical reports on the forever swelling numbers of foster care system. So many unwanted children that will never have a home or a family. Newborn babies being abandoned in dumpsters by scared, unprepared mothers. Not to mention the death rates for women preforming "at home" abortions with coat hangers because they are to ashamed to go to a clinic and obtain a safe procedure.

I'm a young college student in PA and I don't know what I would do without my local PP. I have a medical condition where I have to be on birth control almost 24/7, or else the bleeding won't stop. My family doctor charges $45 for the same brand that I get at PP, which is only $6. I actually went this morning before class and they raised the price to $16 a pack because of this cut, the women behind the desk told me it's only going to get higher. Soon I won't be able to afford my medicine, there for will have uncontrollable bleeding. I first found out about PP in 7th grade when I was bleeding for 3 months straight. I went from a normal 7th grader, so a pale, always in pain sheet of paper. My local PP doesn't do abortions, they just refer you to a local clinic that can do one. I fully support everything they are doing. They're not corrupt in any way. They are helping and teaching young women AND men about their bodies. Please, for the sake of the youth, keep funding for PP.
