Halloween is still a month away, but that didn’t stop hundreds of zombies and pirates from hitting the trails at University Lake to support the Blood Bank of Alaska.

The Zombie & Pirate Fitness Festival featured everything from a full marathon to a 2K for the youngest competitors, but it was more than just fun and games: These zombies were out for blood.

It’s been a tough year for the Blood Bank of Alaska, and the organization has been at critical supply levels for many blood types all summer.

“We’re recovering, but we’re still low in several types,” said blood bank representative Star Poe, including O negative, O positive, A negative and B positive.

After crossing the finish line, racers were able to refuel with pizza, orange juice and hot coffee, and learn a little bit about saving a life.

“I actually made an appointment to donate blood in a few days here,” said Abby Rideout, who won the marathon in full zombie costume. “I was motivated by this race to do it.”

With more than 500 participants Saturday, blood bank officials said the message didn’t fall on deaf ears.
