Burglar Steals Over $13,000 Worth of Ivory From Anchorage HomeThe problem, however, is that the owner’s ivory collection is so large that the missing valuables went unnoticed for some time.
Anchorage police are looking for a burglar who stole more than $13,000 worth of ivory from a south Anchorage home last month.
The problem? The owner isn't sure exactly when the burglary occurred. Because the collection was so large, nobody noticed when several of the valuable collector items went missing. Police say the burglar took several art pieces, including two ivory tusks carved and signed by local artist Byron Amos. This marks the second major ivory theft this year. In March, burglars took two collector carvings from a home in west Anchorage. Local ivory dealers say thefts aren't uncommon in their business, and several say they themselves have been targeted. But with dealers on the lookout for stolen goods, police say buyer beware—the thieves might try and sell the pieces elsewhere. "They certainly may try to sell them on the street corner, they may try to sell them to a shop—we just want to raise awareness for anybody who may be approached by somebody with these art pieces that they may likely be stolen…may try to sell them not only on the street but online," said Anchorage police spokeswoman Anita Shell. If you've seen these stolen carvings or have any information about the crime, you can call Anchorage police at 786-8900, or to remain anonymous and be eligible for a cash reward, call Crime Stoppers at 561-STOP. |

Keep an eye on EBay to see if the crook lists it.Check the pawn shops, and any ads in the paper selling ivory pieces. Sooner or later the thief will make a mistake.Probably someone the owner knows.
